From his Minneapolis based studio, David Schwen uses his many talents to inspire, provoke and construct clever, innovative compositions – a visual communication master.
Schwen executes his creative ideas so effortlessly that it’s easy to underestimate the sheer genius of the final result. His way of transforming a simple object into a social commentary is what draws you in and keeps you coming back for more.
His Food Art Pairings play on the well-known pantone swatch, however instead of pairing simple colours that match, he looks to classic food combinations – bacon and eggs, macaroni and cheese or chips and salsa. Layers of thought, and well… food!
Creating a lot of his work for editorial publications, the designs have depth and meaning. Schwen forces us to look at the world from a new perspective – creatively and critically. By using simple shapes and materials to construct his complex ideas, Schwen is able to captivate his audience on two levels; visually and mentally. Simple enough for a child to enjoy, yet layers that can only be understood with maturity.
Working mainly with collage and object photography, his work is a reflection of the present attitudes of our time. Combining the Swiss flag and Swiss cheese to be one & the same, making Rafael, Donatello, Michelangelo and Leonardo recognisable as a lime and creating sandwiches with Helvetica, his creations are limitless.
Relying on an understanding of social media, his project ‘Interactivegrams’ leaves the social comment for his audience. He creates a series of heart-based images, in the same place as the Instagram ‘like’ button. These can be interpreted as a quirky series of images allowing interaction on Instagram, or could be making a comment on how social media has turned everything and anything into something that is ‘likeable’.
How deep and profound you make it is really up to you, Schwen leaves plenty of room for personal creative interpretation, it adds to the fascination & appeal.
